Download Free Article on How to Make Key Decisions Before You Buy a Powered Parachute

So you have been bit by the flying bug! This may have been a lifelong dream to fly, a mid- life goal, or you may have had flying experience and now decided that flying, low and slow in a powered parachute is exactly what you need. You may have taken some preliminary steps to investigate what it takes to get seriously involved in the sport. You have found that manufacturers seem more than anxious to sell you an aircraft. You may have scanned the internet and found dozens of what seem to be great deals on used aircraft. And you may have been told by somebody that learning to fly a powered parachute is a piece of cake! Now what?

I can tell you from watching the experience of many prospective powered parachute pilots, that some jump right in and live to regret their impulse decision for a variety of reasons.  I also know dozens who spend years over analyzing and never making a decision to take a step forward. We offer this simple checklist of issues as a way of prompting you to investigate with due diligence and then get on with fulfilling your dream. Here is a summary of the primary decisions that you should make before you make an investment of time, money and other resources:

  •  What type of flying are you most interested in?
  • Would you prefer to fly a simple single seat aircraft or do you envision carrying passengers? What is involved in learning to fly?
  • Do you want to purchase a new aircraft or a used aircraft? Are you a builder, or do you mainly want to just fly?
  • What other expenses are involved in owning a powered parachute?
  • Do you have support available including instructors, flight examiners, qualified maintenance personnel and factory resources?
  • Do you have places to fly and people to fly with

Six Chuter SkyeRyder II

SkyeRyder II AB Airframe Kit Parts

SkyeRyder II AB Airframe Kit Parts

The SkyeRyder II AB is not so much a new model in our line as it is a new legal way to build and certify with the FAA. Six Chuter has been manufacturing our aircraft in “kit form” since our beginning in 1991. The Sport Pilot rules complicates the manufacturing of kits. Most manufacturers, including Six Chuter International LLC focused first on development of a fully factory assembled Special Light Sport certified aircraft, which in turn authorizes us to produce an Experimental Light Sport kit that can be up to 100% completed by the manufacturer. Our Elsa kits utilize all of the components (including engines, canopies and instruments) that our Special Light Sport unit offers.

Six Chuter has coordinated with the FAA now to offer a true “Amateur Built Light Sport” kit. This is a new option for legal certification of powered parachutes. This kit will require at least 51% of the fabrication and final assembly to be done by the builder/owner. The model designation is the SkyeRyder II AB. This name of course goes back to our very beginning. The SkyeRyder was the name of the very first Six Chuter that was entirely kit built by the buyer. The SkyeRyder is a copy of our Legend and the real difference is the degree of fabrication and completion necessary by the builder and the FAA certification process.

Six Chuter is uniquely qualified to develop this kit due to our long history of offering our aircraft in this form. The owner/builder will be provided with detailed and complete manuals as well as all of the forms and applications required to certify their aircraft as “ABLSA”. The owner builder will also be able to apply for an FAA Repairman Certificate that allows them to do their own annual inspections. The owner/builder will also be free to use their own engines, canopies and other components to complete their “Experimental Amateur Built”.

The full rolling airframe kit will start at $6,275. Six Chuter will also offer several other component kits including, engine, canopy, instruments, accessories and other options.

Powered Parachute Kits by Six Chuter

“A cost effective option for Kit Builders and Owners of dated equipment”

Six Chuter is one of the few manufacturers who offer builders the option of purchasing a powered parachute in phases. One or more kits are available that allow a builder to assemble a fully legal, FAA certified or Part 103 powered parachute over a period of time and within a budget that works for the owner-builder. These kits are available for the P3 Lite (either ultra light version or certified amateur built light sport) and for the Legend XL (all models and certified experimental light sport or amateur built light sport).

The rolling airframe option is also a great alternative for hundreds of powered parachute owners who did not make the January 2010 deadline established by the FAA for transitioning their two-seat ultralight powered parachutes to light sport.  If the deadline was missed there are very few options to avoid flying illegally and risking thousands of dollars in fines.  An owner of a previously considered ultralight can remove the engine, instruments, canopy and certain other components and use them on a new Legend airframe kit and have that legally certified as Experimental Light Sport.

The kits are organized into three groupings but can be modified to fit exactly what each owner-builder requires.  As an example if a builder already owns an engine that meets the requirements for certification as experimental light sport, then the engine component kit would be modified to only include the items each owner-builder wants.

The kits come “sub assembled” which means that many of the brackets and bolts are already drilled and attached to the appropriate airframe part.  This leaves the builder with a much easier task of bolting each airframe part together.  All bolts, nuts and other hardware for completing the airframe are completed.  All parts used in our airframe kits meet our ASTM standards and are the same parts that are used on a factory assembled and special light sport certified aircraft.

Kit I Rolling Airframe:

  1. All airframe parts to allow the owner to complete the airframe to “rolling” status.
  2. All molded fiberglass parts (dash and seat)
  3. Upholstery and seat belt harness
  4. Throttle and throttle installation parts
  5. Standard Gas Tank included
  6. Canopy Risers included (cable or nylon depending on the model)

Kit II Engine and Wiring:

  1. Engine of choice
  2. All parts necessary to install the engine (cooling system, oil system)
  3. Instrument system and all components required to complete the wiring
  4. Propeller

Kit III Wing

  1. Canopy of Choice
  2. Line Socks
  3. Canopy storage sack

2015 Six Chuter P3 Lite

Sunday, February 15th, 2015

New P3 Lite. Light. Strong. Easy to Fly.

New P3 Lite. Light. Strong. Easy to Fly.

Six Chuter 2015 P3 Lite

Understanding the P3 Lite

This seems like an odd title perhaps. But as we have gone into production and began to ramp up marketing our discussions with potential customers and even our network prove to me the need for really understanding the objectives of this model, as well as our pricing strategy.

It Is An Ultralight

Flying under the FAA Part 103 ultralight rule remains a thing of beauty, but not necessarily easy for us to achieve. The upsides:

  1. No license is required.
  2. There is no legal training requirement. (lets make it clear that we do not want to sell without buyers having source of training and we can provide contacts for same.)
  3. The is no legal age limit (we have had pilots as young as nine years old flying single seat ultralight. While not required, training is all important)
  4. Owners can do their own maintenance, repairs and inspections.
  5. The operating limitations (day, VFR etc) are relatively easy to live by.

Mark Martin, Production Test Flight P3 Lite

Mark Martin, Production Test Flight P3 Lite

The downside of the ultralight rule includes:

  1. The “vehicle” can’t weigh more than 254 pounds empty. (The P3 Lite weighs in at 252 with the new plastic molded seats and a little less than that if they stick with the fiberglass seat). You can’t add much if anything and stay legal.
  2. You are restricted to a maximum of 5 gallons.
  3. No passengers of course.

This is a simple flying machine meant to meet part 103 requirements and designed to sell at less than $10,000. If a prospect wants to start adding items then it could be built and certified legal under the amateur built rules, but best to keep this an ultralight.

It Is Powered Parachute, Not a Trike Buggy or Powered Paraglider with Wheels

There are advantages and disadvantages to both. Understanding the differences is important to potential buyers.

Trike Buggy Vs. PPC

Performance Design Barnstormer 360 Canopy

Performance Design Barnstormer 360 Canopy

  1. Trike buggies are typically smaller profile and because of that can’t accommodate comfortably a larger pilot like our P3 Lite can handle.
  2. Trike buggies typically are steered with hand controls (both throttle and canopy steering). The P3 Lite is a true powered parachute with foot steering, stick for ground control and a throttle. This frees up the hands for photography.
  3. Trike buggies are usually flown with smaller elliptical style canopies. While more efficient than a rectangular canopy the elliptical is more difficult to learn to fly safely and can be a handful to kite up. The P3 Lite uses a Performance Design 360 rectangular canopy that is easy to use and safe to fly.
  4. Trike buggy engines are usually a smaller engine with less power and a brand that is serviced in Europe and elsewhere. The P3 lite uses a 42 h.p. Kawasaki that is well proven in the U.S. ultralight market. It is easy to service, rated at 750 hours between overhaul and can lift more.
  5. Surprisingly most trike buggies are priced higher than our P3 Lite.

The Price is Right

Kawasaki 440 42 HP Engine. Rated at 750 TBO.

We wanted to hit the under 10K market while not compromising quality and safety. We were able to do that by doing more in house fabrication and using some “off the shelf” parts such as the plastic seats.

Our retail price for the full kit (includes airframe, canopy and engine) is $10,495. In that price we will include a $500 coupon for offsetting at least part of the training costs that most customers incur. If a customer is experienced or otherwise doesn’t want the training coupon then the retail price in kit form is $9,995. That includes virtually everything required to build a beautiful, well crafted, strong, safe to fly and easy to build powered parachute.

If a customer wants to build in phases they can start with the rolling airframe kit for only $3995.

Six Chuter P3 Lite Single Seat Ultralight Released for Production

Monday, June 2nd, 2014

Six Chuter International LLC announces the release for production of their all new P3 Lite single seat powered parachute.

New P3 Lite. Light. Strong. Easy to Fly.

The P3 Lite has been in the design, research and development phase for nearly two years. It is a true powered parachute (not steering with hands like a trike buggy), and meets the strict requirements of FAA rule 103 for ultralights. Thus there are no licensing requirements and no medical certificate required. And in fact there is no age limit and technically no training requirements to fly. Six Chuter wants all their new pilots trained properly so are uniquely offering a $500 coupon for training with each aircraft.

The company objectives included building a powered parachute designed for easy manufacturing, easy building, safe and easy flying all for a retail price under $10,000!
